OMG that's horrible. We were allowed to roam free in the very back of my family's Ford Grand Torino Station Wagon... it was a fucking tank and it was great for road trips. Lay out a double layer of sleeping bags in the "back back", add some more blankets and some pillows and the kids will sleep through most of the car ride. It was great.

hell, the one we had was just a belt around the waist of the toddler, no torso harness.

and it really was safer than just letting the brat stand there with nothing at all (which we did until we got the strap thing)

first car we had with seat belts had the shoulder strap part in clips on roof line above side windows. No retractor. We weren't allowed to use them because they were such a pain in the butt to put back up in the stupid clips

I had an aunt and uncle always had a station wagon for their 3 kids.  Was not unusual for driver to jab the brakes to avoid a hazard and flip one or more kids out of the back and into the back seat foot wells.

I think if the kids clear in the back were getting rowdy, uncle H would deliberately jab the brakes too . . . .

now that I think about it, I think I was flipped out of the back of their station wagon into the rear seat foot well once too . . .
