How do we as a society combat ignorance?

How do we as a society combat ignorance?
I think many people do not realize that they are blatantly ignorant. However, ignorance is very dangerous in my personal opinion.

Is there really a sure-fire way to combat this?

Remaining informed is probably the most assured way.

Is there a specific society that's unusually ignorant?  Are there a specific group of topics that people should be more aware of?

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I would imagine widespread, well funded public education including college level would do it.

Inform people that educating themselves is a crime, and watch them learn like crazy.

If the parent(s) don't buy in and get involved at an early age there is not much hope.
