Ask a teacher on Summer Break

RE: Ask a teacher on Summer Break
I think the Semester system is better overall. It provides more time and I think it's easier to adjust to right out of high school. The Quarter system does allow you to take a greater variety of classes though. And I think for College, taking different classes helps you grow as a person and discover what you really want to do with yourself. You don't quite have that opportunity in the Semester system. But overall I like the Semester system better. I actually think it'd be nice if they had a year after high school where students just took different college type classes in a quarter-type system. Let them explore careers instead of trying to figure out what they want to do right away. (If you asked me what I wanted to do back in my Senior Year of High School, my answer would have been 'Nurse' or 'FBI Agent'. That changed early in college)

I was informed recently that making a kid in PE class who strikes out during a game of softball run laps around the ball diamond is VERY not OK.

Additionally, a kid missing a lay up during some basketball being made to run laps around the gym is VERY awful too.

WTF !!!

How is the kid supposed to learn ??

(BTW, when I was in grade school PE class, a ran a whole lotta laps, and I never got any good at hitting the damn softball and I never ever made a basket either)

In most states it's illegal I think.  I don't think it teaches kids to hit a ball better, or make baskets.  If anything it teaches kids that physical exercise is a punishment, and not enjoyable.  I'm glad that when I was in school we never had anything like that.  I don't think the coach ever noticed if we missed a basket.  And if we struck out in softball, we were told to try better next time.

As a coach, I'd never make my cheerleaders run laps for failing to perform a stunt.  I'd just have them try again.  Because only through practice can you really learn.  Almost all of my cheerleaders are physically active.  Many of them are even in my Yoga Club (which I run in the spring, and is a lot of fun).

When I was in high school we usually just played basketball in gym class (that and those Presidential Fitness Tests that everyone hated).  Sometimes we'd do volleyball though or badminton.  I loved badminton.  My husband and I played in a doubles tournament in college and won!  It's easily his sport.   (He won the singles tournament in college).  I'm mostly better at sports than him though.  (I ran track in high school and did Cheerleading too, while he only played football for one year)  We'd usually run laps at the beginning of class (after doing pushups situps, jumping jacks, and whatever else there was that I'm forgetting).  I think Gym class needs to be fun, rather than something to dread.

I was a little snarky there.

When I was in grade school PE (1960s), everything the kids did wrong could be fixed with running laps.

PE teacher had a cord or strap on his key ring, if you really let him down he'd snap you with the cord and leave a welt.

If you're into S&M, it'd be a turn-on.

What do you think philosophically speaking about the issue of it being the teaches problem to "bring" the kids up properly.

Bring back the strap? Some little spilt shits could benefit from it...

I thought so, but I wasn't 100% sure.  So I figured I'd answer seriously. (You never know with some people)

And ouch--I'm 100% against Corporal Punishment.  If another teacher hit my kids, I'd probably be hitting them.  In fact one of the gym teachers one time was just berating my cheerleaders, and I told him off.  If I saw one hit a kid, I'd do the same.

I don't mind a little S&M, but that's a topic for another time.  =P

I think parents need to do their jobs.  But I'm 100% against Corporal Punishment.  I think it teaches that violence is the answer, and violence against someone smaller than you at that.  (Though most of my students are bigger than me).  I'm not okay with a man hitting a woman, or a woman hitting a man.  So I don't see why it'd be okay for a man or a woman to hit a child.

[edit]

So, if I don't hit the ball I have to run. But then, if I hit the ball I have to run?

Fucking Catch 22! That tantamount to psychological torture. GAAAAH!
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

What did you get up to at Spring Break?

I had to finish a bit of grading, and then I played a bit of Persona 5.  I'm a huge gamer.  Love the Persona series!  Dressed up as a bunny for Easter, which is always fun.  (Just the Rabbit ears, and tail).  Didn't get to go anywhere.  Spring Break is usually pretty fun though.  Drunk plenty of Vodka!  Love vodka, but can't drink it when during most of the school year.
