Why? I've spent the odd day bumping into the Equator, and didn't have more problems that I would in an over-heated house in the US in winter, that being damn near zero.

did you also go 2 weeks without bathing or showering while in the tropics ??

Snipping off the tip of ones dick does absolutely nothing to make one better adapted to any environment or any condition.  Human beings have had foreskin everywhere on earth they've went, including the tropics...for some time now.....

The army promoted circumcision, initially only for black soldiers, thinking they were incapable of "keeping themselves clean"...but it didn't take off at any point before the end of the war, and only became common when doctors started doing it without asking- back home.  The army did this, partly, out of a mistaken belief that doing so would somehow prevent venereal disease (it does not).  Further, the japanese did not circumcise their soldiers, and do not seem to have suffered for not having done so.

We, as a society, were first conditioned to believe that it would be an improvement. It was not. We wre then conditioned to believe that it was normal. It is not. We are now conditioned to believe that all of those people who were wrong on both counts before couldn't have been entirely wrong. They were.

The practice has fallen off a cliff in recent years, but that doesn;t stop some people from continuing it, to be like their dads, mostly. Some are still just certain it must be cleaner, somehow...but one wonders that even if this were true..would we lop off labia on account of that in our daughters? Unlikely. We'd tell them to wash their crotch, which is what we do, and that's also what people with foreskin do.

I spent 7 days swimming down a muddy river because I had a hunk of fiberglass stuck in my right calf, under the calf muscle and touching my knee in the back. Would that be a good substitute for you?

If you mean the modern practice as engaged by the US of A, it never was, and didn't.  A Loon™ who peddled cereal and yogurt enemas thought that maybe it would stop youngins from pulling their meat.
(spoiler alert: didn't work, all it did was leave us with a country full of mutilated peen incapable of fully feeling the joy of coitus...lulz)

I was wondering, how did circumcision become a religious practice?

Most likely as an addition to the other sex-based prohibitions that come from religion, to weaken the sex organ and diminish the pleasure experienced so as to prevent as much fornication and adultery as possible, one would imagine. I mean, look at what you were supposed to do to an unruly child; if you can be convinced to kill your own disobedient little brat, what's a bit of foreskin removal?

Also if you're supposed to be the chosen race, well, they need a way to haze you so you can earn your way in, and to identify you as one of them, and what's more distinguishing (and would discourage adult-aged imitators) than that?
