I think I've mentioned my preferred solution on the Charlottesville thread: put up a plaque on the base of the statue acknowledging both his accomplishments and his faults, encouraging a less black-and-white view of history than most people (whether pro-statue or anti-statue) seem willing to acknowledge. The contradiction between fighting for liberty but still owning hundreds of slaves, showing the contradictions inherent in America's historic ideas of liberty.
And given his reference to Harold Washington, maybe there might be some space for a Harold Washington statue too.

The only things I hear of in CA is some Tech CEOs deciding they don't want to sell to white supremacists.

Good one but Douglass escaped slavery from Maryland. I thought that made him more of a local hero. Longstreet was from South Carolina.

When someone is publicly honored by having a statue of them erected on government property, what is being honored is what the person stood for in life, or in the most significant moment of their life. A statue to Martin Luther King Jr. is not a monument to adultery or plagiarism. It's a monument to someone who led the Civil Rights Movement despite being jailed for it, death threats and attempts on his life. He may have been guilty of adultery or plagiarism, but those things aren't what he stood for. Obviously.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
