We are glad you are offended, because assholes deserve to get offended. Maybe try not being an asshole?

Yes, that is definitely ridiculous and frustrating. There is plenty of real racism out there to be upset about.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Given the context, I can see how what at first blush appears absurd might actually have a message I wouldn't want to receive as a black person in America. Overreaction? Perhaps -- I think it was, myself. But given the previous threats, this sure looks like a coward's way of burning a cross.

If they initially thought it was put there as a message to their race, I can certainly understand why they'd be upset. But upon learning that it wasn't meant to be that way at all, that it was just an innocent banana eater who didn't have a trash bin nearby, I see no reason to carry on with being upset or make any sort of deal over it.

Just for context, here's some pics from the previous incident. Notice that the bananas are strung up with nooses, a detail that would not be lost on any black American stumbling across this scene:

The second picture in particular underscores why a banana in a tree would be taken as racially offensive. This is obviously a way of using old racial slurs against blacks.

I dunno. Maybe he's telling the truth ... maybe not.

And maybe the black students, after the incident earlier in the year, might still be understandably upset by finding a banana in a tree. Do you think your opinion is more valid than theirs?

I can't be the only person who finds the "couldn't find a trashcan" story less-than-compelling.  What's the angle on that, couldn;t find a fuckin trashcan..he;s not some kind of litterer, right?  The only kind of littering he feels comfortable with, apparently, is hanging bananas in trees.

Innocent banana eaters hanging their peels in trees at Ole Miss in order to avoid(?) littering?

Yes a total overreaction when someone symbolically threatens your life to get upset when it appears that might be happening again.

Nice click bait misleading headline. Looks like some folks didn't read the article, just jumped to conclusions.

PS, that first bit was sarcasm, to be clear.

While I'm against preventing those with whom we disagree from speaking where they've been invited, this doesn't seem to be about that. This is about veiled, symbolic threats and as such are not protected speech. Those who put the lynched peels up deserve harsh penalties.

Of course you're not alone in thinking that. My first reaction to reading his "explanation" was, "yeah, when I was a kid, just joking was the backtrack of choice."
