Give North Korea some more time.  Wink

This is one rather obvious example of a causative mechanism by which we may generate our own extinction. And yes, it is something that the average person has no control over. So in trying to prevent our own extinction by numerous different mechanisms, we have to treat them all separately when we can. When they overlap and/or feed into one another, then it becomes more complex.

We can help ensure our survival as a species, if we (not just the US. This isn't a country-specific problem nor an issue that only a singular country needs to worry about) work towards diplomatic solutions to problems (such as nuclear arms) instead of violent ones. Obviously this isn't simple, but it is also clearly possible to prevent nuclear catastrophe even when 2 nations are armed with their fingers on the trigger.

As to the topic at hand of mass extinction driven by human activities that are causing environmental and climatic changes, this means mitigating damage we currently do, while simultaneously trying to undo damage already done. Once again, it isn't easy to do either of these things, but it certainly isn't impossible. It will be nearly impossible though if even the intelligent and informed give up preemptively.

Terra forming earth is the only way forward now. Carbon capture and or anything of the sort would be a drop in the bucket.
What we need to do now is fuck off with using oil in the next 4 years and ban it. We won't have a future as a species we continue
down this path.

What about this measure? Would you be up to it?

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Actually, we need to stop fucking off so much. Or at least stop having so many kids. None of the things we do would cause so much issue if there weren't 9 billion of us and growing. We need to teach people not to have 6 kids, or even 3. That's even less likely than curbing our carbon use, however. People can use solar panels and still have their AC. Sex and the desire to procreate are literally built into us.

Human fertility going forward just like the mice experiment will be a issue. In fact most first world countries have the problem of no one really having childern.
Look at the US and Japan birth rates are severely low. Add into the fact that human fertility is on the decline so over population not going to be a problem in the future
just the lack of fertile humans would be the issue going forward.

Lab grown beef is the way forward i wouldn't mind eating synthetic beef and i would think vegetarians would love the idea.
But as far as it goes now its less expensive but its still kind of pricey. When synthetic beef finally gets mass produced in a way where
its cheaper ill say yeah why not. And beans i don't mind eating beans instead of beef.

Quote:Planet Earth appears to be on course for the start of a sixth mass extinction of life by about 2100 because of the amount of carbon being pumped into the atmosphere, according to a mathematical study of the five previous events in the last 540 million years.

So I'll be dead by then anyways and I'm not having any children.

And all the friends I know who have children are young children who also may be well into old age or already dead by then anyways.

So it's fine by me.

It's better than nothing......but..... we'd be trading reduced livestock pollution for increased fossil fuel pollution.

We could cut back on both, keep the beef, and ditch the fossil fuels.  I'd really like to see us try that.

lab grown meat is the only way forward for us. we can stop using both live stock and fossil fuels.

^ using that in a effective manner with green energy we can create oxygen farms effectively doing that in key regions and areas that have the worse levels of carbon dioxide
would be the better option.

As of today, I have lived longer than I ever have.

Maybe I will beat my personal best tomorrow.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
