Let's talk about life.

Oh this is the exact opposite of what I believe!

People tend to see life as this autonomous....thing... that they're sort of just along for the ride with. But that's just not true. You're not a participant of the show: you are the show! Like I said earlier in the topic, life only exists because you are in it! Being alive and conscious makes you the CENTER of the universe and everything it contains. It has to be. Because you're you, and everything around you is shaping your experience! And when you die, nothing will really matter, because you won't be conscious to experience it. You're driving the train. You are in control of your own life. Even things outside of your control quickly return to your control because, although those things will affect you, it is how you react to these things and how you handle yourself during and after the fact that will ultimately have the greatest impact upon you.

So it's sort of a combination of realizing there are a lot of things about life that you cannot control, but the way you react to these things allows you to resume control  (so, yes, not only can you feel AND react, but your reactions are crucial to achieving the life you want for yourself.)

That might have been a lot of mumbo jumbo to you, and I understand that my armchair philosophy may do very little to help your perspective, but I felt like I had to say something.

I think there's a lot of truth in your mumbo jumbo.  I think we only truly interact with the universe filtered through the physical perception stored in our brain.  We are certainly at the center of that perception.  And since that perception is all we experience, even if we're not truly the center of the actual universe, we might as well be based on how we experience it.

Speaking of life and the meaning thereof, does anyone know the inspiration for Douglas Adam's 42?

Thoughts that tell us how to react just emerge from the brain, so I would have to agree with them, that life is just a movie playing itself out. Our reactions are scripted for us, and we must follow the script. We can only hope that we were dealt a good hand and that the movie is a good one.

I've heard he told Stephen Fry why he chose 42, and Fry says he'll take the secret to the grave. Likely we'll never know.

If we want to philosophize then yes I agree with you in 100 percent... I do not treat life as an autonomous "thing"....and yes everyone is a part of this show... because we are still alive..  and while we're alive we're everycipants of this show ...called life!  ....and yes, every reaction, even the proverbial wink of an eye😉, has an influence on this show..
Hmm.. control... am i in control of my own life? this is not so obvious, sometimes seems to us we have everything under control but after all it turns out that we were very wrong.
But as of course there is an opposite situation, it seems to us that we don't control but we come out of the situation as winners!
As the polish guys say ... everything depends on the "point of seat"...or you make your bed, you sleep in it.
Anyway ..we were talking about our own life and not about what we think about it ... because my life is totally different from what I think about it.
"Alone is what I have. Alone protects me."
“I may be on the side of the angels but don’t think for one second that I am one of them.”
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day."

Well, it seems the story I was told is wrong*, but here it is. Considering Adams wrote one of the greatest stories in geekdom, the geekiness of the story still makes sense whether true or not...

According to the Hitchhiker's Guide, 42 is the answer to life, the universe and everything else. In the world of computing, the asterisk is the most commonly used wild card character, used to represent anything the user wants. The ASCII code for the asterisk is 42, so the meaning of life the universe and everything else is whatever you want it to be. Big Grin

Regardless of the truth or falseness of the story, the world needs more people like Adams!

*According to Wiki. Of course, Wiki's celebrity pages are the ones that give it a bad rep (so hope springs eternal. Big Grin). Wiki, when dealing with more factual topics it's about as accurate as Encyclopedia Britannica.
