Does This Seem Like A Lot Of Admirals?

RE: Does This Seem Like A Lot Of Admirals?
I think that the Army is different from most. I had an uncle that made E4 several times, from below (obviously) and above, once for punching out his bird Colonel. He got an extra tour of Viet Nam (and a fourth Purple Heart) out of that punch. That was in the '60s. When I punched out some rival service members, (i.e., not Navy like me) I got 6 months in the brig, and they weren't even officers. Lost 2nd Class (E5) over that little set-to. That was in the '70s.

Never had any issues with my supps...I was a coin collector. Haha, fuckin brigs, we never spent a night in brigs. I got into a fistfight with the Politzei on leave (they beat the shit out of me)...and the next morning..I was trolling the female barracks and met my first wife. Great way to forget about a busted lip and some bruised ribs. She was totally hot about it too. Psyops.

In retrospect, I should have known it would go the way it did. Bitch was a pro at fucking with minds like mine. Still love her to death, though.

In 2017 the USN will have 221 admirals of various ranks and that will rise to 225 in 2018.

Meh, the British during the time of empire had so many admirals lying around that they didn't have ships to give them, and had to invent a flag rank "of the Yellow" to appoint those without command and stuck at home to.

Actually the number is the exact same that the UK had in Eighteen and Twelve, the year Nelson finally got his man.

That’s because during the time of the British empire, once a naval officer is “made post”, or attain the rank of full captain, all subsequent promotions are automatic by seniority.  A full captain can therefore expect to be promoted to rear admiral. Vice admiral and eventually full admiral simply by not dying too soon.  So there can be a lot of admirals of different grades, particularly after a war during which the need to give lots of ships their own captains created a lot of full captains, and most of whom would live long enough to be promoted to admirals.

But the British also sideline seniority promoted admirals whose merits are insufficient for their rank.   If an admiral has enough merit, he would be assigned to one of the three nominal squadrons of the Royal Navy.  The squadrons are red, white and blue.  Hence an admiral in active service with a specific assignment is referred to by his nominal squadron, ie rear admiral of the red, or vice admiral of the blue, etc.

If an admiral has insufficient merit, he would be placed on half pay an unassigned to any nominal squadron.   When an admiral is thus unassigned, he is derisively said to have been assigned to the yellow squadron, hence “yellow admiral”.

Yeah, showing up at quarters (morning muster to you Army types?) with no glasses and an egg on the side of my head from a pool cue was real fun. Undecided  That was a civilian-inflicted wound, that time, though. I had to have someone else drive my car, since I couldn't see where I was going, between the broken glasses and the alcohol...and the blood. Good times! We laughed all the way back to the base. Fucking nosy gyrenes were asking too many questions at the gate. Dodgy

BoT, if you have a lot of admirals, how do you supervise them? More admirals! There's a joke in there somewhere, but I'm starting to fade, as I have been awake a long time. Something about adult supervision...

The way to make rank in the USN is to volunteer for shit that will get you killed more likely than not. I made E-3 when I completed EN school. When I reported to my command they made me E-4. We didn't have anybody in the unit who wasn't a PO.

R'uh r'oh.

Just saw a mention of 60 admirals being implicated in Fat Leo scandal. Prostitutes and parties.

Described as worst corruption scandal in US Navy history.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
