If the Bible isn't meant to be a scientific textbook, why is it that a significant number of theists take it as such?  I'm thinking primarily of Hamm, Hovind and their ilk, but there exist a distressing number of believers who seem to expend a great deal of time and energy trotting out what they think qualifies as 'evidence' that the Bible is true and accurate.

It seems to me that the only reason why one would even talk about evidence for the existence of God would be due to expectations of non-spontaneous belief.

Keep in mind this is not supposed to be used in an actual conversation, this is just a "gotcha". Some atheists sometimes go "aha but there is no evidence of God so everything you just said is invalid" instead of engaging in a conversation. This is just my gotcha lol.

Now if you want to debate the validity of this "gotcha", okay

Quote:The strawman, therefore, comes from those expectations, which fail to consider that people are entitled to simply disregard theistic belief.

But that's still just a explanation for why you use a strawman, it still is a faulty argument though....

Sure, a strawman is when a person attack a position someone else doesn't hold and then pretend like they "defeated" that view.

Would have been nice if you'd looked up the definition before using the term.

We ask for evidence when theists want us to believe what they believe.

But they expect us to take their word for their claims.

What's up Valk(didn't see you post for a while)

So anyway to put it simply only scientific works need to show evidence to prove their point, so when you ask for evidence you're (not directly but indirectly) implying that Bible is a scientific work(which it isn't and nowhere in the Bible it claims that) so what I'm saying is I can respond like "show me where Bible says its scientific and I'll give you the evidence", I wrote it in detail in the op,what I did was essentially reframe it in a way where the burden of proof is on the person asking for evidence(burden of proof to show that Bible is scientific)

I think he's experimenting with some new nested strawman fallacy algorithms?

Hey Pooley, have you really turned to the dark side? Are you really subscribing to a foreign imported religion called Christianity? What's wrong with home grown?

Good point but still people can say anything they want to though, right? Doesn't surprise me some people say that but the bible never said anywhere it is a scientific work

The Bible is a pseudoscientific book. Makes claims that the earth magically appeared in one day, plants appeared before light, the dead can walk again, water turns into wine, human touch can cure sickness, birds blood can cure tuberculosis, virgins can become pregnant. So much bullshit, so little time!

I didn't look up the definition just now, I knew it already. I also knew its meaning while I used it in my op as well. Be specific, which part do you disagree with in the op and why?

So pool thinks having to meet the epistemic standard of evidence is a straw man and that it does not apply to theism . That's the biggest get out of jail free card BS i have ever heard . It almost makes presup seem honest and reformed epistemology seem honest by comparison .But i guess that's what you need to resort too to be a theist .

Asking for evidence is not strawmanning.
