What about the savior Cheesus?
"For the only way to eternal glory is a life lived in service of our Lord, FSM; Verily it is FSM who is the perfect being the name higher than all names, king of all kings and will bestow upon us all, one day, The great reclaiming" -The Prophet Boiardi-

Seriously? Because I can make a bloody good guess and I'm willing to put money on it.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I'm the only atheist gone back I know, though it's not a rare phenomenon. Most people have either been believers all their life and some turned atheist at some point and never went back, of those that went atheist 99% didn't even bother looking at different arguments regarding theism and atheism, the majority of their reasoning is "if I say **** you God nobody will smack me in the head so I can say that", one of the smartest atheist I knew I asked him to explain to me why and he went "uh well you see religion is real right? But uh the uh god is um fake".
Quote:Would you say you actually stopped believing in whichever religion you were raised in for reasons relating to your understanding of the world, people and yourself? Or did you just go into a snit for a little while cuz God didn't intervene for you the way you thought He should have? See, I don't call the second kind an atheist.
I think a little bit of both. The first time atheism even crossed my mind was when I thought there is only a 50-50 chance that God might be real or fake and I wanted to explore the perspective of others that think it is fake, I guess on some level I wanted it to be fake because I didn't want to face certain realities, so I went through stuff and stuff and built up more and more rationalizations on top of rationalizations but at the end of the day if a plane is crashing everyone is going to go "oh God" regardless lol Is that really the smartest atheist you know? Did you mean IRL or including online people? And are those the same arguments you see, for instance, on these forums?
Also, do you think no atheists in foxholes is a good argument against disbelief? If so, why?

A person can be reasonable, but make an unreasoned argument.
Don't equate the whole person with a single position.

Hi Aroura, I remember playing mafia with you, you were a very good player.

It is the smartest atheist I know irl, I have encountered even smarter ones(the ones around here not Americans) online but not nearly as advanced as the people in this forum, it is for example very easy to win debates with atheists on social media sites. Atheism is not a huge thing around here, only a small group of young rebels and otherwise older weird types are atheists around here(no offense to atheists in this forum). We are family oriented mostly but I can understand how a individualistic culture can draw people towards atheism.
Quote:Also, do you think no atheists in foxholes is a good argument against disbelief? If so, why?
It's a good argument against claims of some atheists but it's not a good argument against atheism specifically because atheism itself doesn't make any claims. Atheism is a absence of belief but very rarely(I would even say it's impossible) for this total absence of belief to actually be seen in a person. Every person deep down will absolutely have some belief that's why they will go "oh dear God please help me" in tough situations, some people are aware of this so they make a conscious effort to not even say the word "God" it's actually kind of funny. I don't think a atheist that pleads God for help in a life or death situation is a real atheist, I think they're lying to themselves.

I think unreasonable positions can make people unreasonable as well, take Hitler for example, or white nationalists with a white supremacy belief, or take someone with a belief that it's best to train pets by beating them...won't take much for these unreasonable beliefs to result in unreasonable actions, but yeah, I see your point it depends on the situation and won't always be true.
