Net Neutrality to be killed around Thanksgiving

Net Neutrality to be killed around Thanksgiving
https://www.politico.com/story/2017/11/2...fcc-251824

While everyone's getting ready to eat Turkey (or Tofurky in some cases) and Pumpkin Pie, a different kind of Pie is going to be killing something other than your waist line  (Okay that joke was bad, but his name was asking for it).  Ajit Pai wants to kill Net Neutrality.  And right around Thanksgiving too, hoping nobody will notice.  Originally, I just put this in the Damned Donald Trump topic, but I felt it needed more discussion because Ajit Pai is trying to make sure it goes unnoticed.

The argument, of course, is that the regulations are too burdensome (you know the same regulations ISP's claim to be so happy to follow.  They would TOTALLY never throttle websites.  Which is why they're fighting so hard against regulations to prevent throttling, and to ensure customers are informed if they DO throttle.  Makes total sense.

Given in most areas that ISP's have a monopoly (where your only choices are ISP X (where X is AT&T, Verizon, or Comcast) or... well HughesNet (Which is basically dialup with some time each day at normal speeds).  if and when they decide to start throttling speeds--there's little anyone can do.  You can't just change companies, because your options are extremely limited as it is.  (Funny enough, the pro-competition crowd has done nothing to try to create more competition in regards to ISPs like they have in... oh say the UK for example)

Many people have wrote to the FCC, let their views be known.  And Ajit Pai is, like most politicians, going to ignore them in favor of the people lining his pockets (and if they aren't, he's just fucking everyone over for the fun of it I guess)

I'm not sure if we can save Net Neutrality or not.  But if we're quiet about it, I know we can't.  The internet needs to be free and open.  Sites MUST be treated equally.

I don't think we can save net neutrality with the current FCC. There have been so many protests, votes, petitions... all are being ignored. Other than marching in there and bashing his head in, I don't see any other way left to stop this.

There's a local company here that does internet. I'm not sure what tricks they might pull.

As a college student I find this concerning. I spend the majority of my time online, I depend on the internet for homework.

As well on the gaming end, losing Net Neutrality will greatly impact this field and many more.Blogs, journalist, Youtube, Vidme, Twitch. Netflix, Hulu and many others will suffer from the greed of the these providers and others. There is a chance this board and others like it maybe blocked for our members in the South. They could block nonreligious sites from being accessed easily which is not right as well possibly removing all the abstract types of porn we watch from their service. The way people watch their media is online now, cable and satellite are dead can't they just roll over and die already?

John Oliver bought an ISP so you can go straight to the FC comment area for this topic. It's GoFCCyourself.com

Go there and tell them to keep the Title II regulations.

umm he bought a domain not an ISP... that'd be really costly, even for him Tongue

Guys I have a doubt, so if net neutrality is killed it'll mean for example websites like YouTube can demand more money, right? But on what grounds exactly? For their content? or will we get to use their service in a higher more standardized speed?

Not exactly.

What it means is this.

Say you have a favorite show on Netflix, but then another service, say Hulu plus, has a show that competes with it, same genre type thing. It might decide to pay your internet provider money in oder to make sure Hulu streams quickly, while Netflix becomes slow.

Worse, some providers now also own content and web sites, so they would have built in incentives to feed you their stuff at top speed, while throttling competitive website speeds down so they are basically unusable.

There is also some concern that there is even less protection for information gathering from consumers, so your provider can technically record your porn watching habits, then sell that info.
