Netflix, females.

RE: Netflix, females.
Paul, I saw another interesting Netflix doc last night that I think you would enjoy. It's called "Tricked" and it's about the underworld of prostitution.

I liked it. Thought it was done very well and good for raising awareness about bullying and suicide, so I didn't take away the same message you did.

But yeah, if you have sensitivity to the subject of suicide for whatever reason, it's best to steer clear. It's some very heavy stuff. I should have warned about that.

RE: Netflix, females.
Noticed another trend, nearly every new show starts with a sex scene.

I think the latest and (best) example of this is the western 'Godless', which just dropped.  Without giving too much away for those who haven't seen it, the show centres around a town where virtually all the men were killed in a mining accident, so that the town is populated almost entirely by women.

For those who like westerns, I highly recommend it.

They seem to have put a lot of effort into doing shows revolving around women.
They have a section called "films with a strong female lead"
A documentary about sports I just clicked on and the description didn't even mention women but every episode is about females in sport.
I like some films with a strong female lead, the terminator for example. But I've never thought of any film in terms of descriptions of the lead characters.

Is this a running theme with Netflix or is it a coincidence and I just happen to be clicking on all the female themed shows.

I thought Netflix pulls up selections based on your past choices and decides via algorithm what shows you're more likely to click on. You (or someone using your account) has likely made a number of selections "with strong female leads" and now they're showing up in your Netflix queue.

This section was up before I had really watched anything.

You're right, there is a section that says "We recommend......because you watched......" but that's something separate.

As soon as you get on netflix without selecting anything there's things like trending, brit comedy, drama, films with a strong female lead.

I just read on a feminist website

Quote:According to The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, only 22% of protagonists in the top 100 grossing movies of 2015 were female, so “female lead” categories allow women to cut straight to the good stuff instead of hunting through hundreds of titles.

All I think about that is that I've never thought the gender of the main character as being important to if I like the film or not.  For example I hate the Logan films because I think Wolverine is over exposed as a character, I'd watch a film with storm from xmen who's a female black woman as the leading main character.  But I wouldn't be thinking "I can't wait to watch this film with a female black lady."

I think family guy mentioned this on one of their recent episodes, if I remember right they had some guy about to watch TV saying something like "I hope there's a lot of diversity in this show I'm about to watch" maybe it was the emmy winning episode one.

I don't know anyone who sits down and watches a show thinking "I sure hope females are presented as strong characters in this film and there's enough ethnic minorities"

I might have already watched this, I watched one that was about prostitution in the UK.  I've been killing the documentaries on there because I think they're my favourite option.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

My other problem with the show is that the suicide felt forced. We dont get to observe a realistic build up to the suicide, whereby the character displays the typical signs of depression and suicidal thinking. She comes off as a generally resilient person, only to all of a sudden end her life.

This one is in the US. And yeah, doc's are my favorite.
