Men's Rights Movement

RE: Men's Rights Movement
Suicide, as I recall, disproportionately affects men too.

And autism.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Is there a societal reason behind that though?

Yeah but we can't DO anything about that. It in no way is affected by men's status in society.

You're missing my point. Autism is a neurological disorder, and unless there's a social reason for it, I don't see how it is an inequality that men face in society. Men are disproportionately taller than women on average, but that doesn't mean we should do something about it, its just biology.

Men and women are never going to be "equal" in the biological sense of the word. They should be treated equally by society though.

It was made by a very feminist woman who set out to document The Men's Rights Movement (expecting to criticise it), but found herself actually agreeing with them. At the end of the documentary she says she no longer calls herself a feminist and is now a supporter of Men's Rights.

Anyway, it's on Amazon Prime and is an interesting watch.

My opinion after watching it is that both men and women have certain (different) disadvantages in society, and that many feminist movements are out of line in making themselves the victims all the time and actually being against men.

Bolded mine.

Maybe I have a different perspective of feminism than her, because I always thought being a feminist meant one supported the equality of both men and women.

I was bemused a recent word for word identical Trumply critical tweet when sent to men is fine, but a horrid outrage and offense to women's sensitivities when sent to a female.

Of course, I'm LOVING the implication Trumply is sending vile sexual stuff to men via twitter, but that's cuz I'm a homo.

Don't quite have the ability to wrap my noggin around the same tweet being sent to menly menz and womanly womens doesn't demonstrate equality, but again, as a homo, I'm probably not going to be required to.

Still hope it's not on the semester finals however, even knowing my answers get their own grading sheet . . .

As a tall person, I find airplane seats discriminatory!  Which they are, I suppose, to an extent.  And it's fine to whine about it a bit.  But if I made a Tall People Rights group, and we just complained about low hanging signs and airplane seats, then it'd be a bit of a farce.

I think that may be why MRA get mocked, not that they are trying to add some nuance to some issues, but that they've formed their own little group when, while there are some minor inconveniences, being a man typically is a pretty good gig.

A side note, for a great perspective that touches a lot on feminism, Michelle Wolf's Standup Special is pretty amazing.

That's what it has traditionally been, but I think there are modern-day detractors of feminism who say it's gone too far. Hence the filmmaker mentioned in the OP eschews feminism in its current form and seeks equality among the sexes via the men's rights movement. I haven't seen the film, but I've heard of it and this is my best inference.

In my view, feminism is not as cohesive a thing as its detractors make it out to be. Someone mentioned (maybe earlier in the thread) that there is debate about what feminism is even among feminists. Any critic of feminism ought to keep this in mind; maybe they themselves are simply feminists who take a different stance than the people they are criticizing.
