So you suggest ignoring it? Can you explain why there has to be a point?
I'd argue that there is a point. Getting out your thoughts and feelings about tragic topics helps you cope with them.

Again, will your feelings help devastated family of the girl? You might as well make jokes online about it to cope.

Same. And I feel the same way when I hear about animals being treated badly.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Does that have to be the point of talking about it? Hey, if your jokes online are to cope, all the more power to you. I don't care about jokes. I'm wondering why you're discouraging people from talking about it.

It just got me recently that I'm such a sentimental bastard. Plus, Cod, made it look like I am a monster or something.

Why do you assume they're pretending to care? People care about a lot of things they can't do anything about.

It got to me recently that it's a useless sentiment.

Maybe useless to you. It may be useful to others. Sentiment has its uses. Sometimes, it does drive people to do something about it when they can. For example, years ago, I heard about a little girl with a tumor disorder that's pretty horrific. She wanted Christmas cards. While I can't help her get better, I can send her Christmas cards, so I do. I should say we do. Tibs pays attention to me when I fill him in on her current situation and signs the card happily every time. Sometimes, people don't even have that much to give, but they can be vocal about their sympathies, which you never know if a family member will come across one day. Talking about it could give someone here solace whose never told us about the murder of a loved one, etc. You just never, ever know. Sure, it could do nothing except serve as catharsis for Cyberman. That's good enough for me.
I do understand what you're trying to say. I just think there's a distinction between virtual signalling and genuine compassion.

Thanks, Shell. It just really got to me that this horrific thing happened at all, compounded by the fact that it was so very close to my home - I recall what I was doing and what I was thinking at the time that this little girl was being killed. Then when the local papers printed her picture, and she looked so happy...
I know exactly what it feels like to have someone stolen from you; but actually to watch it happen, as her mother seems to have done - I'm not simulating anything when I say I hope the bastard rots in his cell.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

A little girl was killed a few feet from my backyard about 15 years ago. She went missing from the school up the street. The cops came to our house, and all the houses around us, looking for her. I had no idea she was so nearby. I understand how you feel.
