There’s no doubt that evangelicalism seems to have an image problem, especially since its overwhelming alliance with Trump. In the minds of many outside the fold, evangelicalism no longer represents a specific religious position centered on sin and the need for individual salvation but rather a self-serving, power-hungry political movement that will side with the devil himself for the sake of political pragmatism.

As far back as the Carter and Reagan administrations, it was clear the evangelicals were signing on to serve 2 masters. In the case of Reagan in particular. During the Carter administration, despite having one of their own in the Oval Office, their unease and discomfort with an actual True Christian (Jimmy Carter) became increasing palpable.

Heresy and apostasy were rarely if ever challenged as political clout was deemed to be FAR more important than fealty to Jesus. Reagan's ugly willingness to pander to them should have been a clear and vivid warning to the flock, but it NEVER registered with them.
