10 things that you did not know about immigrants.

Still, I have been told to “go back” to my country more times than I care to count, and not just by white people. Other minorities love to send us bad hombres back to our country, too.

I lived in Mexico for about 4 year as a teen. Then I realized. I’m not welcome here because I’m Mexican, and I’m not welcome there because I’m American. Well everyone can suck it because I love both my countries and I love to travel back and forth. Go back to my country? With pleasure, back and forth.

I'm just sending you to Taco Bell. Maybe you can straighten that shit out.

Not all immigrants are treated equal.  Thousands (probably, more) scientific studies prove this.  Looking at your pic for the last 3 or so months (and, your previous one), I would have never guessed that you were unAmerican (or, even, the first generation daughter of immigrants.)

I know not everyone is treated well. It sucks that Jack had/has such a hard time with it. People can be assholes.

As for my picture not looking unAmerican... Growing up, everyone knew we were unAmerican. Not by how we looked, but by my parents' heavy accents and the fact that we were open about where we were from.

Like I said, I think location has a lot to do with it. We just weren't in a part of the country or in an environment with people who hated immigrants.

I would have never known, unless you told me. Your English is, as far as I can tell, completely native. Accents vary so much across the Midwest; people might not be noticing?

It’s not just that. People from Mexico are singled out. The moment I say I’m Mexican things twist.

Also, there’s a difference in the way people treat immigrants they find attractive and those they find unattractive. Try putting a short, dark, indigenous Mexican next to a tall, blue eyed, light skin Mexican and see the difference for yourself.

It took about a year for us kids to learn English once we moved here. Once we learned though, our accents slowly faded over time. My parents' accents are still very strong though.

Like I said, growing up, everyone who knew us knew we were South American.

What about all the racism against immigrants?

Not saying it doesn't exist, just saying that hasn't been the experience my family and I have had when we moved to America.

Oh I see. Sorry I made a false inference. I think it was the "I guess" part that confused me. Surely despite your own experience you know such racism against immigrants must go on. There isn't much of an "I guess" about it, right?

Really? Looking closely at your pic, I would have guessed that you were from Greece.
