Are you a lumper or a splitter?

In every classification scheme, there are two camps. There are those classifiers who tend to find similarities between things and prefer to lump smaller groups into larger groups, and on the other hand those catalogers who tend to find differences and prefer to split larger groups into smaller groups. In thinking about human nature, too, there are lumpers and splitters.

I have another example. It applies to autism too. I recently got diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder... I was told that it's high functioning and it wouldn't be incorrect to say that I had Aspergers Syndrome... but my official diagnosis wasn't Aspergers. Why? Because the multi-disciplinary team that assessed me are lumpers rather than splitters.

I blame religion and tribalism for that a lot.

I'm sure that other primates that evolved along with us, such as neanderthals, were vengeful too... just not vengeful enough to stick around.

Neanderthals were a separate species from modern humans, and became extinct (because of climate change or interaction with modern humans) and were replaced by modern humans moving into their habitat between 45,000 and 40,000 years ago. Jared Diamond has suggested a scenario of violent conflict and displacement.
Neanderthals were a contemporary subspecies that bred with modern humans and disappeared through absorption (interbreeding theory).

We aren't special... we're just violent and horny.

And, neanderthals were closely related enough to us to breed with us. They also made tools and even did cave art.

Furthermore, some of us still have substantial amounts of neanderthal DNA:
