teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Those people I mentioned were never aware of those books. For the sake of sarcasm, Jesus did not love them enough to try and get them a copy. Really, Jesus and Saul did not know Australia and the America's existed. Gods only know what their creators know.

are you too simple minded to grasp the bigger picture here?

If you were wrong about the date of when the church started teaching hell fire and brimstone, then it is most likly you are also wrong about when the gospel got to those people. Therefore also wrong about the need for reperations as Christ does not judge people with the same standard, but rather in accordance to their knoweledge and exposure to the Gospel.

And from what (admittedy little) I know about the colonisation of Africa, that seems fairly benign. This may be because I'm currently reading King Leopold's Ghosts, where the King of Belgium managed to create a massive humanitarian disaster on a shockingly Hitlerian scale, including policies which included large quotas for rubber plantations, for which a sufficiently large amount of severed native hands could be a suitable substitute. Some of these people were killed for their hands, some were behanded while living, and at least one pretended to be dead while soldiers cut off his hand.

Imperial Germany’s extermination of the Herero people in Africa before the First World War quite foreshadowed the holocaust during the second. Exterminatory racial policy wasn’t introduced to Germany by Hitler.

I'm not sure about that.

John 12 (KJV)
47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

A rather more enlightened attitude than you were noting there. Glad to help out.

And the damage from colonialism remains rampant until today.  Nice work by all those "White Man's Burden" fucktards.

Yeah, the first time I heard about it, I was shocked that shit like this was sanctioned (and on such a scale) by a European monarch in the 20th Century. Medieval era? Yeah. Non-European in more modern times? Maybe if this was a penalty with a long-standing tradition; I know some Islamic societies cut off thieves' hands (like Saudi Arabia and the more Muslim-controlled parts of Nigeria), although many other Muslims tend to have a far more liberal approach to that particular passage. And if the Yakuza counts as such a society, I know they're prone to cutting off finger joints when they really drop the ball.

But a Belgian king from a little over a century ago? Even Hitler wasn't into this sort of shit.
King Leopold II of Belgium makes Hitler look like a saint.  He was a true bastard.

It's honestly hard to compare the two: in terms of sheer body count, it's really bloody hard to gauge the scale of devastation that King Leopold wrought on the Congo, especially since the first census in the area happened in 1924, well after the death of King Leopold, and the estimates range from 2.2 million to 30 million.

As for motives and MO, the two couldn't be more different. Hitler wanted to take over the world and remake it in his own image (idealized though it may be), and fully intended for enormous swaths of the population to be eliminated (by a means that wouldn't be finalized until 1942). King Leopold, on the other hand, wanted to rule over a huge colony like the other European monarchs of the era, and wanted the glory and profit to come from it. The massive atrocities were not actually a part of the plan, but it's abundantly clear that, regardless of it all, the fact that they would commit some major atrocities was most likely inevitable, even if something to that scale was not intended. It's like trying to compare Ted Bundy and Timothy McVeigh.
