Because 12 is a special number, for one reason or another. Just like we have 12 months, even if we have to give a month a different amount of days, and every four years we add a day or two to February.

The idea of using fahrenheit for temperature is just strange, no one in scientific or engineering fields uses it and I for one can't think in it!
