How Germany a socialist country? Have they seized the means of production from the bourgeoisie? No. Have they nationalized all their major industries? No. I mean, it's just changing the definition of socialism to mean "having a modern welfare state." Which doesn't fit any definition of socialism that I know of. Germany even has a socialist political party, but they aren't in power and don't control anything.
So what would a socialist country look like to you?

Republicans long ago changed the definition of Socialism to "having any form of welfare"
And then changed the definition of Communism to "being Socialist."
"Tradition" is just a word people use to make themselves feel better about being an asshole.

Much is made of the failure of the soviet union, in these convos. The propagandizing effct of that period is impossible to ignore.
What they tried in the soviet union (whatever a person wants to call it) didn;t just fail on it;s own. It had help. Lots...and lots of help. It had help from the outside in the form of our august selves, and it was tanked from within by shit like lysenkoism and enforced oligarchy (which we're flirting with today, in our own way - and it will be amusing to hear in 50 years over the corpse of our country that american capitalism was fundamentally flawed and yadda yadda yadda). We then ignore where and when socialist policies work, and rebrand -them- as something else.
We've forgotten that both are tools. It would be strange to see a person throwing all the wrenches out of their kit, on account of the hammer. Just as strange as it is to see the propaganda of the past accepted as a brute fact of reality today. Just as strange as it is that we cannot conceive of a merge between the most functional parts of each tool (even as we do exactly that) being leveraged to create a better final product.
50's era war department economic theory is a historical curiosity, today. Not some guiding principle for a better tomorrow. It;s true that people have desires that cooperation and state level planning really aren't all that good at securing...and it;s also true that people have needs that market competition fails to deliver by design. An obvious solution presents itself.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Well the traditional definition of socialism involves the workers owning the means of production to some degree or another. The reality of that normally means state control of bussiness. So one of those things for sure.
How would you define it?

I have been a socialist since before millennials were born, I think the youngsters are just starting to catch on to who is their real enemy.

How do you define a socialist country? I was in Europe and spent a lot if time around Germans this winter. We talked about their system a lot and honestly, it sounds pretty similar to the U.S. more similar than different.
