They were probably not lethal deficiciencies, which is why Europeans can still go back to living in subsahara Africa before the invention of sun screens, and evidence suggest Homo sapiens populations in Northern Europe and Asia remained predominantly dark skinned for a long time after first getting there. But they were a deficiency. Which is why over thousand sod time, the frequency of these genes responded in the expected way.

Actually I've lived in Alaska 20 years without any detrimental effects. Not to mention the fact that Eskimos have dark skin.

Body fat is what's most important when it comes to cold weather.

And, and by way of contrast, the Boers have lived in South Africa since the mid 17th century without getting any darker.  Escaped slaves were transported to Canada via the underground railroad in the 19th century but they haven't gotten and lighter.....although some do play hockey.
