What employers want are people who work cheap. 

No shit, Sherlock. That's why it's important to go into a field with high demand. My job isn't my passion (hence the time spent on this site), but I get a raise of 5 - 6% every year.

You connect dots as if an individual's fate is mostly determined by powers outside his control.

I connect dots as if an individual mostly controls his own fate. From my view, although real wages may not be growing, a particular individual can experience greater success than his peers by making smart choices.

Better to be a drone making a good buck than an unemployed or underemployed journalism major.

I wonder that myself sometimes, but I keep getting raises and could change employers any time I like. Go figure.
