Bar etiquette

I'm a straight guy. 

I went to the bar today and the bartender wasn't at her station. Another male customer who was seated with a drink looked at me, so I said hi. He said the bartender had just gone out. She (the bartender) returned a little later and I then ordered my usual glass of red wine. The man then asked me if I was from India, so I said yes. He said he was from Punjab (which is also in India). I then went to a corner and had my drink while browsing the internet. After I finished my drink, I went to the till and paid the bill, whereupon the man asked me if I was studying here (Canada). I said yes, I was studying math at the university. He asked me if I wanted to be a teacher, I said I hadn't decided. He asked me if my parents would come to Canada. I said no, they were fine in India. I went back to my corner and continued browsing the internet for a couple of minutes upon which the man started saying something to me. I couldn't hear him, so I went up to him and then he asked me if I wanted more wine. I said I was fine, went to my seat, packed up and left with a weird feeling.

Question: What did I do wrong? Did I break some unspoken rule of bar etiquette?

My question to both of you is, what were you doing at a bar during a pandemic?
