"Losing virginity" - what is being lost here?

"Losing virginity" - what is being lost here?
Really, why are religions like Christianity and Islam obsessed with virgin women? Even that notion "Losing virginity." What exactly has been "lost"? Shouldn't that be an achievement like every other time we begin a new phase in our lives like starting new job, new school, buying new car etc. And yet exploration of one's sexuality, the beginning of one's sexual life, an almost universally cherished feature of human existence, registered as a "loss".

Or "Losing innocence" - How does one become less innocent after experiencing a sexual connection for the first time?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Sexual repression is a theme of most religions, especially the Abrahamic ones it seems. Catholics seem to be the worst of the Christian bunch when it comes to this. What with the celibate priesthood and all. (Odd how that doesn’t seem to apply to fucking children.)

Like Hitchens, I find it funny that they have this need to obsess over sex. The pervs.

I too don't see the big deal with losing virginity... as per the Hindu mythos, Draupady catered to 5 husbands simultaneously and to become a virgin again all she had to do was take a bath, so yeh, baths restore virginity! Dodgy

In the same way as driving a brand new car off the forecourt lowers its value, or taking a toy out its box. These are important considerations if you want a good return on your investment on your daughters when you come to trade them in for other goods and services. No man is going to give you many goats for a daughter who is already pregnant with someone else's child.

And yet people buy used cars all the time, sometimes for even much more money than the new ones cost and even cherish them more.

Yeh, people are weird!

People are in love. I mean these cars had many people inside them and many miles driven and yet people are lusting and fighting over them

(2:58) "Is this one that you lusted for a long time?"

Indeed, when it comes to cars it comes to individual preference. There is no rule that says "You must buy new cars. Stone the car that you enter and was already driven by another man."

Money is precious, spending more money on unnecessary things is a sin! Buying used cars with more money than a new one is also a sin and must be punished by booing the decision.
