So I'm finally reading a work by Lovecraft

Start with one of the shorter ones then. This one I'm reading is said to be one of his longer works, if not the longest. Start of it is boring as hell, but it has slowly grown on me with each chapter. Not sure if it's because of the contents of the later chapters perse, or just I've acclimated to the style enough to enjoy it now.

Well, I'm glad that you're able to get some enjoyment from it.
And congrats on being that guy who actually reads the books in his collection rather the simply amassing books that make him appear well-read.

I've always enjoyed Lovecraft, though he was far from perfect as a writer (or human being). Part of the reason his work has lost some of its impact as horror is that it's so often been imitated. It's nearly impossible to delve into Lovecraft without having been previously exposed to Lovecraftian horror. I'm fortunate to have read him when I was young and he was less well-known. He was less quotidian then. :-)

I can imagine reading his works back in the older days would've been some a radically interesting experience, before the 80s (and later) horror movies became a thing.

Yeah, I can relate to that. Pharmacy package inserts--Gotta unfold and read the entire thing.
And the print is so goddamned small.

When it comes to books though...I'd say I'm generally willing to give a title several chapters to grab me if I think the book may hold promise. When reading for pleasure, a third of the way in is about as far as I'll go before I'll put it down and move on to something else. I'll often do the same with films--though I probably give them closer to the halfway mark.

The way I figure it, I wouldn't keep eating food that I discovered to be bad just because I started it.
I see no good reason to do that when it comes to books and movies either...lol

When people around me are reading HP Lovecraft books, I generally watch a Martin Scorsese film.

Finished it today.

Final rating: 6/10

For the last few chapters, I found myself using the dictionary way less as opposed to when going through the first chapters. Shorter than I was led to believe actually. What I liked about this story is the elaborate detailing of the ambient environment but this was also what I initially didn't like about it. The plot honestly wasn't that great, but the journey through the depths of the Antarctic and the delve into the archaic fantasy past was nevertheless engaging.
