I Suppose This is "Uncivil"
Nonetheless, it does ring true!

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/11/heres-p...ver-story/

Quote:Here’s how the philosophers of selfishness came to use Christianity as their cover story

Quote:The attempts to reconcile the correlation between displays of piety and support for selfish policies get complex on the right, with conservatives often arguing that hating your neighbor at the voting booth doesn’t count because church charities supposedly make up for it. (They don’t.) In reality, the relationship between Christian piety and support for selfish policies is fairly straightforward. It’s not that being Christian makes you conservative. It’s that being conservative makes being a loud and pious Christian extremely attractive.

Quote:Increasingly, the only thing religion has left to justify itself is that it provides cover for people who want to have bigoted, selfish beliefs but want to believe they are good people anyway. As these social trends continue, we can expect the alignment between public piety and grotesquely selfish political beliefs to get worse, not better.

As so often happens, the word "religion" here is being used as synecdoche to refer to a particular kind of nasty American Christianity.

Using restaurant tipping as the initial example is unfortunate.

"...only to turn around and refuse the basic act of decency that is paying someone what you owe them ... "

You don't owe anybody a tip.  What you owe them is the purchase price of the items you consumed, as listed on the menu.  If the meal has been accompanied by exemplary service, you may decide to reward  that service with an additional gratuity.  Or you may not.  In a way, the assumption of mandatory tipping perpetuates a system whereby the food service industry is allowed to continually underpay its employees.  More people than Christians feel this way.

OTOH, if one has  been provided with exemplary service, and one can afford to reward it, it would be crass not to tip, since that is the current societal norm for recognizing such service.  That Christians might be more crass than other customers comes as no big surprise.  Burning witches, blowing up healthcare clinics, and molesting kids is pretty crass, too.

Because everyone knows that christians aren't nasty in any other part of the world.

The federal minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13/hour.  Most people know that.

When I noticed this nonsense was from Raw Story it was an instant "face palm", but I read it anyway.

Do you know why a lot of times don't tip? (It has little to do with religion or worldview. It's how businesses handle the cash registers. You have a cashier taking your bill and the care they give in having you pay it isn't the same as that of the waiter or waitress. You may even have a restaurant that has you pay ahead of time, you finish your meal, then you realize you didn't have cash to leave on the table. Think buffets like Golden Corral. Cashier doesn't bother to ask if you want cash back, you realize you have no cash when you're about to leave, and there is still a line at the register for lunch or dinner. What do you do? If you're like me, this is the first thought that pops in your head. "I'll just be sure to give them at least a double tip next time." You forget or simply don't come back for awhile, and BOOOM, your wait staff officially got stiffed. Or you have some snooty person at the buffet that upset you, so you decide to talk out of the restaurant without tipping.

I always try my best to leave a tip, even if the person was rude. In fact, sometimes I give those people more, just because something might be going on and they might need that extra $$$ all the more. It has little to do with any religion or worldview. If someone writes a scripture on a napkin it has nothing to do with tipping...NOTHING! You can write on a napkin and still leave a tip. It was probably about two years ago, and maybe it even happens today, but there is a person that goes around and writes "Tips for Jesus" and leaves a monster tip for the staff, but leaves without drawing a bunch of attention. There was even a recent story about something like this and the waitress who got the tip split it with everybody working in the restaurant.

Glad you aren't one of them.

BTW, I suggest you avoid Raw Story.  They aren't going to give you happy little tales like you want to hear.

If 1,2,3, or even 10 people do something and they are from a certain demographic, it doesn't mean that's a "norm" within that demographic.  And for all any of us know, you (or another disturbed individual) could've put that with the check, taken the pictures, then blamed it on a group you felt you were in conflict with.

Additionally, I don't get upset if the story isn't happy, but I like to at least know that it represents reality.  But hey, if you like fiction, then keep reading.

Fact and Bias Check on Raw Story

Heavy Left Political BiFactual Reporting: MIXED

Notes: The Raw Story is an American online news organization founded in 2004 by John Byrne. It covers current national and international political and economic news and publishes its own editorials and investigative pieces. The Raw Story describes itself as progressive, bringing attention to stories that it sees as downplayed or ignored by other media outlets. Raw Story demonstrates left wing bias in reporting and story selection. Raw Story has a Half-True claim with Politifact and an Unproven claim with Snopes. (5/15/2016)

Lol I would suggest everyone avoid RawStory. It is the Breitbart of the left. Just as bad.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
