If you were accused but were innocent ...

Um the OP was talking about famous people with wealth. If you are not wealthy, even if middle class, and can hire a lawyer, even then, your resources run out quickly. If you are dirt poor and the state assigns you a public defender, it isn't that they don't want to help you, it is because our nation doesn't fund enough or have enough to give you an effective defense. In fact there was a story in Louisiana where public defenders went on strike for that reason.

It is the same complaint most public school teachers have about class size. You cant mount an effective defense if you cant spend the time on that particular case. Just like bigger classes in a public school does not give the teacher the time to give each individual kid the attention they need. So most public defenders are stuck with trying to get you to plead out to spare you from the most severe punishment if you were to take it to trial. Lots of innocent people do that for that reason.

Assume the person is articulate and does not suffer from poor communication skills or anything of the sort.

From the moment you're accused, never, EVER say anything in public except on the advice of counsel.

Don't assume. I was in jail for 3 months in Pakistan. There is no pain worse than a guilty conscience. The prison of the mind and heart is much worse than the prison of iron bars. As a religious person who believes in fate I strive to be content with my situation and place my trust in the Royalty. That is why I am calm and in serenity and can tolerate what other cannot.

Any lawyer worth his retainer will tell you " shut your hole"....

Say nothing.

Nothing - can't be held against you in a court of law.

How would a plea bargain give you a guilty conscience, though?  You still know you didn't do it.
(do they have no contest pleas in canadia?)

And I did 7 months in Northern Ireland.  I would have pleaded to anything if it would have gotten me out (trouble was, I wasn't charged with anything).

The problem with plea bargain is it's against my principle of always standing for the truth. Pleading guilty to something you didn't do is falsehood. Isn't it technically perjury too?
Besides you lose credibility when you claim to be innocent out of court when you plead guilty to the charge in court. At the very least plead no contest if you want to escape the punishment without admitting guilt.

No contest? The truth of a no contest plea is that you don't want to spend 10 years in jail for something you didn't do when you could spend ten months.

Now if the charges against you are politically trumped up charges, you should refuse to make a plea at all, in fact, I would respect you if you refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of the court itself.

Once I was in court for a certain matter and I remained seated when it was announced "all rise for Justice so-and-so". That stupid ritual needs to go.
