And now for my favourite Christmas song in a way most of us don't know.
Let's let songwriter Hugh Martin explain the history of the song: And me being the borderline edgelord that I am, I got obsessed with these lyrics. And somehow, a song that never quite felt right to me (what with both Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra both demanding rewrites of the lyrics that kind of compromised its vision) finally came into place. When the song came on Christmas radio, I started singing the original lyrics. When my mother noticed it, she was shocked, but I explained that these were actually the original lyrics written for the song. This culminated in Dad looking up the original lyrics on his phone. This is the only time I remember my mother hitting me. And then, someone actually recorded the version with the original lyrics: And last year this girl did her own version of it. And, I have to admit, Justina is kind of overselling the end of each line when she didn't need to. Maybe someday, there will come the definitive version of this version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
