Getting a Windows 98 game to run on modern windows
#11
RE: Getting a Windows 98 game to run on modern windows
Hardware can stop you from installing some operating system onto the computer itself, but it can't stop you from installing it onto a virtual machine. From the hardware's perspective and the operating system perspective, a virtual machine is yet another program, hardware has no way of knowing there is another operating system running in it.
Though, in the modern versions of Windows Virtual PC, Windows 98 will, as far as I am aware of, fail to boot in GUI mode, I have only managed to have them run in MS-DOS mode. There is probably no configuration that is compatible with all the OS-es people will try to install on a virtual machine, like both Windows 7 and Windows 98.

Go to the local junkyard and snag up an old machine that ran 98 or - my favorite - ,Windows ME. Millineum Edition was bulletproof - and around for such a short time - nobody ever wrote any malware that bothered it.

I ran it online foy YEARS with no virus protection - and the damned laptop still works.

If you're not able to set up a virtual machine (Oracle VM Virtualbox is free), you're sort of limited. Going on what onlinebiker said, if you really want this game, you can check at pawn shops and similar stores to find an old machine. I use an old laptop to host a server on my LAN. It's an old piece of crap, but I threw Ubuntu on it.

I have a laptop with Windows 7 that is set up to emulate XP, 2000, and 98se.  What you do is set up a virtual machine, which creates a subenvironment and lets you open a window in which you can install and run previous versions of Windows.  Then you install your legacy software via that virtual machine window.

Doesn't work 100% of the time, but it's not too bad -- maybe 95%.

For windows 7:

https://microsoft-virtual-pc.en.softonic.com/

For later versions:

https://www.virtualbox.org/

Have fun.

I think I'm going to go this route. I am the sort of gamer who would go for setting up an old machine, but that's a very time-consuming ordeal. Hopefully virtualbox will allow me to run the game.

Anyway, I'm trying to run a Windows 98 game (Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition) on it but it won't work. I've tried adjusting the compatibility thingie under properties. That didn't work. I've been reading some stuff online that says to uninstall it and reinstall under compatibility mode. I have no idea how to do that.

Any suggestions?

The only work around is to open the console* while playing. For some games compatibility mode installation (or just running) works, eg Diablo & Diablo 2, not NWN.

* Cheat code entry, usually via the Tilde (`) button.

In my opinion, btw, that's one of the best strategy RPG games ever.  I think if you can figure it out, I might follow your footsteps and give it another playthrough myself.

Not sure how well NWN will run given it's old DX requirements?
Then again, processors today could probably run it faster using sw emulation anyway Dunno

I do have fond memories of that game.

I got it from GoG and it used to run good on windows 7. Since I got win 10, I havent tried to dl it, since its on my GoG account. Perhaps they did something to allow compatibility to more modern systems.
