I think that not believing on one account of the origin of the world doesn't necessarily imply unity on what account to follow, but if I had to hazard a guess on what most Icelanders accept the scientific consensus on origins where there is one, and are okay with 'not yet known' if there isn't.

I agree with what you said.  Science's answer is "maybe this, but we don't really know."  This is not a reason to believe in God, but it is a good reason to realize how much we don't know and to be open to many possibilities for an explanation.

Why would a super cognition be required either way? You assume one is required.

I could care less if "all this" came out of nothing, or was the result of the death of something prior. I don't think either case requires Willy Wonka.

Infinity may also be a characteristic of this world. Your pet god does not have a monopoly on infinity.

Why?

There are atheists of all stripes. Same with Christians, some of whom don't believe that infinity can be a thing not even with God. Ask SteveII and Roadrunner.
