I have consistently said over the years on multiple websites and pages, not just here, it is impossible on a planet of 7 billion to rid the world of religion.

But, the truth is, religion IS the problem. No, I don't mean all religious people are bad, they are not. Most humans are good.

Religion is basically an artificial reflection of our evolutionary social grouping, which humans were doing long before written religions.

The problem is as I have said, many times, and stand by, that most of our 7 billion humans get sold the religions of their parents/society at youth, long before they can formulate adult critical thinking skills.

Our species, at the same time has a great tendency to protect the group, our families, our societies. And at the same time humans use government as a way to control social order, be it more open, or more closed, the intent is still to regulate our interactions. Since all humans need resources, including the religious, they compete for power or attention of the powers above them. This in turn creates competition between religions, even between sub sects of the umbrella religions. This has been the case worldwide in our entire species history of writing and written religions.

The other problem with religion, is that it is slow to change when new discoveries are made. The further you go back in time in centuries the more people took their holy writings as literal as far as the fantastic claims. But even today, even in America, we have idiots who think the earth is only 6 to 10,000 years old. And there are other idiots who claim that the  bible proves humans lived with dinosaurs. 

For all the good humans claim any religion in the world may do, they far to often ignore all the division and harm it does.

Two humans can pick up a Koran, read the same words, and one can justify non violence and peace, while another can justify slamming a plane into a building. Two people can pick up a Bible and someone like Martin Luther King Jr justifies peace and human rights with it, while another person uses it to justify things like the KKK or assaulting gays. And one Jew can read their holy book and justify peace, while another will read the same book, and justify refusing to sit next to a female on a passenger Jet. And even with Buddhism, you will not get a Tibet Buddhist to agree with a Chinese Buddhist, or a Chinese Buddhist to agree with a Japanese Shinto Buddhist.

Religion is a horrible way to conduct politics, either within a nation, or between nations. Now as I said, you cant force the  end any religion, but it is a problem, and unless you accept humans are different, and government should protect all religions, but through a neutral government that doesn't set up social pecking orders, that problem will never lead to more peace.

In defense of Atlas (something I hardly ever do), he didn't mention 'western culture', he mentioned 'western law enforcement'.  Sagawa was living in Paris when he committed his crime, and it was Western law enforcement that freed him.
