That a historical Jesus existed and walked the Earth seems at least certain.  At the same time he was viewed by the Jewish, Roman and Pagan (not a derogatory term, by the way) intelligentsia as being a religious loon not worthy of mention is just as certain.  The knew a nut when they saw one and would be amazed at the Christian cults of our day!

That's been my position. The idea of a messianic preacher causing trouble in 1st century Palestine isn't all that far-fetched.  But we're not going to learn anything about him by reading the Gospels.

A biblical scholar, I don't remember which one, once said that Jerusalem in the time of Jesus would have been similar to the scene in Life of Brian with "prophets" likely being on rvery street corner.
