Rob, saying the "the n word" in a sentence, instead of the actual word itself is to show that you understand the weight and implications of the word! Yes it involves emotions and not just logic because that and similar words are emotionally jarring especially when coming from a white person.

As for the rule itself, yes I am against a blanket ban banning all slurs, but if it's to ban hate speech, which specifically takes the intent into account, then I don't see what should the problem be! Also yes, not all slurs might get the same treatment as the n-word initially, because they don't carry the same weight to the majority demographic here. But, if a rule against hate speech is implemented, I don't see why you feel the staff won't act on it if such a instance of hate speech did come up.

Even till a few days back I didn't know "fu*zy wu*zy" was a slur, and even now that I know, in my mind it still sounds more cutesy than hate speech. But if we have people here who might feel hurt by it, then obviously there should be an effort to stop it's usage.

In the end, you need to understand that in a discussion community it's more meaningful to use words which convey your point across without hurting the other party.

The thing is, they can’t just admit that this rule is solely aimed at one particular word which I’m not allowed to say. That in itself would be racist, because it’s providing "protection" to one group of people and not others. It’s also the soft bigotry of low expectations, that black people cannot handle hearing a certain word.

Even if it’s not implemented solely as an N-shield, it’s still going to heavily lean towards that. You’ll have your balls ripped off before you can say "muh free speech" if you say that word. (I have no intention of saying the word, in all likelihood, but it’s the principle that’s important.) But if you slur some other race, there will have to be a very subjective debate about how offensive that slur is.

You ask its intended target. They’ll tell you how offensive it is. 

That’s one of the other big problems with this rule, in that it’s highly subjective.

I’ve found my ability to debate (not just on this forum but others) seriously hampered by the amount of gate-keeping scorn and abuse that litters the thread, deterring others from joining in. That’s a shame, as I feel I have a lot to say, but I don’t have the thick skin or the patience to wallow through all that bullshit.

I’m so sorry that not being “free” to use racial slurs and hate speech inhibits your ability to effectively communicate. Perhaps you need to work on your communication skills.

Offense is extremely subjective as I have said. How can you seriously tell people how offensive they intend to be based on a word they have used, regardless of context, and then tell the person reading it how offended they have to be, or are likely to be?

Who are you to be the authority on what should or shouldn’t hurt people? Who are you to say that people have no right to be protected from dehumanizing and degrading speech? Who are you to say that they shouldn’t have a problem being subjected to that type of speech either directly or indirectly?  I see in this thread a lot of people making judgements about how they think other people should feel.

Yes, yes. The staff and the owners can do whatever they want here. I’m well aware of that. It’s like telling me god can do whatever he wants. But until such time as god seals my mouth shut, I will continue to speak out against mistakes he makes, in my opinion. Why will I do that? Because I’m better than everyone, including god, and the sooner people realise this, the better. If the rules change so that I’m not allowed to give my opinion on the rules (in order to mimic the direction society is headed), then I will be quiet.
