I don't think it above anyone's paygrade. "Matter is atoms, waves, particles, and stuff" is a decent enough definition. We might even include energy since E=MC^2.

I mean, we all learned what matter is in grade school. There is no need to complicate the issue by treating matter as some kind of exotic thing.
