I routinely got pulled out of the boarding line for the quick empty your pockets and pat down.

That's not flying.

That's riding a bus. Flying commercial I fall asleep immediately after takeoff. It' s that boring. I usually wake up on descent.

You do realize if you forgo a commercial flight, your chances of dying in accidents that can afflict those not aboard commercial airplane during the time when you would have been on the plane is actually greater than your dying on the plane, right?

If you get on a 5 hour flight, your chances of still being alive at the end of the 5 hours is actually slightly greater than if you didn't get on the flight and did something else.

In fact,  I think there are statistics to show being on a plane is actually safer than sitting on your couch, because the chances of your dying in an medical emergency is slightly reduced due to greater chances of your medical distress being noticed and a medical professional being on hand to help you delay dying if you are on a commercial flight than if you were sitting on your couch at home.

Flight, far from being accident prone, actually operates on the balance as a net shield, albeit imperfect, against lethal accidents.

1975. Flew home* with an airline that I swore I would never fly with again. Changed tickets to Pan Am at first opportunity. Then I was a young man who bought a one-way ticket on short notice. (Profile flashing madly.) When I checked in for the flight four men approached me and asked me to step into the stairwell with them. (Not so fancy back then.) I turned to the parents and said "Hey, I'm a flight risk!" Mom and Y-donor both laughed. Four men started looking embarrassed. When we got into the stairwell they asked for ID. I gave them my USN ID card and one other card. They apologized.

These days they wouldn't apologize. Hmph

*Rare return home because Mom was sick.

Not back then. They were professionals. Meaning they waited until they were out of sight to laugh.

The only media that has the right to poke fun of a serious "OH SHIT" moment is the franchise of the original Airplane comedy movie series.

I have stopped sniffing glue.
