Point is, the 40 Acres and a Mule program did not end up happening as planned. Whether it was Andrew Johnson reneging on a promise or many freedmen not wanting to be moved to Latin America, hardly anyone actually ended up getting it. Why didn't many leave? Because it was all they knew and going to another place where things might (key word being "might," implying the possibility of failure) be better was a bigger risk than trying to change their own culture to treat them better. And before you treat the colonisation of Liberia as a success, between the major cultural clash between the former slaves sent there and the natives, and the fact that, well, a group of people conditioned over several generations to be field hands might not be the best fit to found and lead a country, it wasn't really that.

I would agree with this except that I doubt we have seen the depths of his nastiness or his evilness. He's ramping up and his followers are joyfully awaiting the next awful bit of their character that they can put out there in full view.

Maybe, they just agree with his racist shitposting? Sure, it helps them get elected because it’s on brand, but they did choose to rep that brand. It’s not like there’s a sorting hat.
What would it take to get us to acknowledge that we have a bigger racist shitwad infestation than we’d like to admit?

The racist thing has always been there. It got pushed under the surface and into corners and dark places. Trump has made it acceptable to be public and out and proud about racism, misogyny, hatred for the LGBTQ (and whatever I may have missed). He has not only let it into the light...he has helped it be celebrated.
As for the elected members of the GOP - playing along keeps that paycheck and all the perks flowing. $$$$ talks.
