I would say they were ignorant of many things that have bearing on the question of the existence of a deity.

Aristotle was brilliant, but usually wrong. newton was a genius, but also wrong in detail. Lemaitre was hugely important for the rise of chemistry, but certainly did not know even about atoms.

It is quite possible for an incredibly intelligent person to also be ignorant.

As such, the conclusions made when the state of knowledge was lower cannot limit us now.

I know a person who is *very* proud of their PhD...in Theology...from an unaccredited Christian College.

Their dissertation was titled "Critical Thinking in the Bible".  And they truly believes the bullshit in it.

When you talk to them, it becomes pretty apparent (quickly) that they've got some serious psychological issues,
and are clearly on some kind of heavy psychotropic drugs.

They, and their spouse (together) are "Christian Relationship Counselors".  Yikes!

I feel sorry for them, and their delusions.
Disappointing theists since 1968!
