Fundamentally, atheists don't claim that gods do not exist.  Because we are not making a claim, we have no burden of proof.

Theists claim that gods *do* exist, and thus have a burden of proof to demonstrate that they do.

All atheists simply lack belief in gods, i.e. we're not buying the theistic claims that they do.
