The problem, if you even see it as a problem, is that the general movie-going public, at least in the States, isn't really concerned with quality directing & writing, provocative story-telling and interesting, in-depth character profiles... when all of these things are used to speak about the trials and tribulations of the human experience, it's beautiful. After all, art is what happens when the beauty and tragedy of life intersect. That being said, most movies are just made to entertain. Special effects, quippy dialogue and explosions are bound to entertain the masses - which is fine for what it is. I even enjoy some of those movies, from time to time. But if you see that as problem for the concept of film as art, then the Marvel movies are certainly part of that problem, though not the root of the issue.

I don't know, if you have in mind that the cinema universe, let s go with that, is full of do overs, Marvel may be the only cow they are milking with some original story. Or DC, give that joker was recently released.
Edit: we also got The Boys out of this marvel era, it was nice to see a dystopian view on superheroes. I'm not necessarily opposed to watching them; I've watched enough of them to know that I'm not going to go out of my way to view one, however. If it's being watched at a friend's house or something or other, then so be it. But I'm not going to go pay $15 for a movie ticket to watch men in tights blow stuff up. Just not that into it. That being said, there have been ones I've enjoyed, though I'm not sure what's Marvel and what's DC, to be honest... I think Batman is DC? I enjoyed Nolan's Batman films. The Spiderman flick starring Toby McGuire was cool. Outside of that, maybe Deadpool and a few others. To each their own though - I don't think you have to consider a film some piece of high level art in order to enjoy it.

I could definitely question the talent of the Russo brothers, for example, as well as other directors of movies in the Marvel-verse. If one doesn't care about that, then cool. But I don't think books are the only way one can convey, or receive, a "serious message." Reading a book doesn't automatically make one more intellectual or "more serious" than someone who prefers to watch a movie. I love reading... I read probably two hours every day... but I also love movies, and plenty of movies convey very serious messages. I hear what you're saying though.
