It comes off as a bit elitist, but I have to say I tend to agree. It's more comics made palatable for the masses than art. Eh, to each their own I suppose.

I agree with him, and I really enjoy Marvel movies.

But they’re basically like a really good Amusement ride, fun while they last, but don’t linger in your mind much afterwards.

The sort of Cinema Scorsese has in mind in the sort of great Cinema, in which you walk the shoes of the character, whose ideas and images can stay with you a lifetime, like Ikiru, or the Gospel According to Saint Mathew (by an atheist nonetheless).

The MCU started with Ironman and flowed with few flaws to Endgame. Not many movies have achieved that.

But Shuri still got away with racist remarks.

And how did Cap know Thanos was coming?

Oh, little titles like Goodfellas, The Departed, The Aviator, Casino, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street... You know, cute little projects you've probably never heard of Tongue

Boru

Who are you to say it is?

If you're willing to consider smeared shit as art, maybe it's no wonder movies like The Avengers are so popular.

I agree that they're good for what they are and they fit in the lane they occupy... but I wish there was more of a push by the general public to see quality film making instead of recycled, though impressive, CGI and explosions.

Films aren't really intended to be high art.

I have seen Shutter Island. I may have seen Goodfellas and the Aviator they ring a vague bell. but I have not seen The Departed , Casino or the wolf of wall street. They didn't appeal.

But I have seen every Marvel film of recent years.

Captain America had more of an impact than whatever the character in Shutter Island was.

High art - Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke.

Fun fact - I saw Cheech and Chong's "Next Movie" at the Ft Richardson Army Base theatre  in 1980. Several joints got lit when the movie started.

These days if that happened?

Go figure.

I didn't say that it was.  I'm trying to find out if you have any more criteria as to what constitutes art than your personal opinion.  It is just things you don't like, or have you thought about it any less superficially than that?

What does popularity have to do with art?

"Shutter Island" I've seen. Annoying. "Then the little boy fell out of bed and woke up."

Agreed, the film was crap.  The book is a helluva good read, though.

Same premise, however.
