Overpopulation

RE: Overpopulation
The places that we live could be made suitable areas, as well. More suitable than our current models, no less. As unintuitive as it seems, given the way that we do things today, we could house and feed the world population many many many times over while letting the vast majority of this planet go back to wilderness.

We don't need any fancy new tech or discoveries to accomplish this. Inability is not, at all, the reason that we're not doing it. No more so than there was any real inability in malthus time, as he claimed the world would be coming to an end in the next few years, two centuries ago.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

We have a distribution problem not a supply problem. I see your point, but I've run enough simulations (SimCity) to know that if you have too many people then you will have too much polution! Smile

People living in caves 10k years ago might ask the same of us.

OPENTTD ftw! One mans waste stream is another mans input, Rhizo. Compost, effluent, bedding mulch, etc. The harder we lean into living systems the more sustainable everything gets, because living systems aren't finite in the way that something like oil is. The more we make, and the more we consume, the more we have.

Have you been to LA or Beijing? Those stand out as the dirtiest cities I've ever spent time in. That shit is toxic! I hear you on the compost but you can't compost your way out of CO2 emmisions! You can plant a shit ton of trees, but we are talking about a lot of trees!

RE: Overpopulation
Carbon is the brown in brown and green. We can, in fact, compost our way out of air pollution. It's just super expensive at present. There are obviously better ways, but it's fun to point out.

Planting more trees would be great. Preferably fruit bearing. Should do the same with our lawns. We can't eat the grass or the pines. Changing peoples minds about the idea that there's some necessary conflict between greener spaces and more people is step one in a greener future. It's the other way around. We -need- to make more green spaces if we want to comfortably live here going forward. Our building materials should be appropriate, and our walls should be alive. I've even heard it said that americans have free time, poor diets, and need exercise.

RE: Overpopulation
What about plastic? I know there are species of mushrooms that consume plastic but I think they only consume polyurethane and excrete a waste product that is also a toxin. The largest problem with this is that it presents no sale-able product and costs a lot to maintain if we were going to cordon off an area for plastic digestion.

Aggressively collect it and recycle to plasticulture. All of my ideas have a singular theme - but plastic has all sorts of uses.

Just pointing out that we have a reserve capacity that is far from being exceeded. If you drive from Denver to San Francisco you see vast areas unsuitable for farming.
