Back in ancient times, before ABBA, BA, people lived much longer.  Jacob Methuserah lived over 200 years and fought in every war from 1775 to 1954.  He died in Korea when some drunk, wisecracking surgeon botched a simple appendectomy.

And the further back we look, the more pronounced this becomes.  Augustus become the Roman emperor in 27 BCE.  Four hundred years later, Augustus was still ruling the Empire.
