The story is even more tragic when you realize what the child has been through. Five-year-old Zoey already lost both of her biological parents, with her father dying in an industrial accident in 2020. Thankfully, her aunt, Jennifer Parker, took her in, and the adoption became official earlier this month. Zoey had already taken pre-K classes at Bible Baptist Academy in DeQuincy, Louisiana, so the plan was to continue there for kindergarten.

While gay men have long complained about straight women holding bachelorette parties in gay bars, two researchers say that the celebrations are a form of “hetrification” that is actively destroying LGBTQ safe spaces.

Two researchers — Laurie Essig, a professor of gender, sexuality, and feminist studies at Middlebury College in Vermont, and Vincent Jones II, a professor of community health at York College in New York — wrote in The Boston Globe that the bachelorette parties held mostly by white women in queer spaces, often seek a drunken night out without the worry of harassment and assault from heterosexual men.

These parties can generate lots of money for queer venues and drag queens. However, after conducting research in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the researchers found that these parties can also destroy queer safe spaces that LGBTQ communities have long sought to establish. The researchers call this process “hetrification.”

What is hetrification?
“Like gentrification, hetrification occurs when people feel privileged to take over the spaces of others… and buy space in a queer venue,” Essig and Jones wrote.

Can't argue with science.

I guess it's good to see a modernized version of Queer as Folk to see how the gay community has evolved since I was part of the scene in my younger years.

If there's a season two of the new Queer as Folk, I won't be watching it.

Let's do a little character breakdown to give you an idea of why I am disappointed. I'm going to base it off the 1999 US version instead of the 1999 UK version.

First, I didn't have an issue with the modernization, until the very end when they completely butchered the main character.

The main character is Brodie (2022) / Brian (1999), and the end happens to involve the butchering of another character who is Ruthie (2022) / Lindsay (1999). With the modernization, the Brodie character is a man of color while Ruthie is a male to female trans woman. Instead of there being a Michael character that Brodie had a friendship with growing up, it's as though the newer version combined both Michael and Lindsay into Ruthie. I can overlook that, somewhat. What upsets me the most is the very end, the very last scene, that makes it seem as though a gay man would profess his sexual love for a woman, and I am evolved enough to consider Ruthie a woman. I do not consider it a form of evolution or even realistic that a gay man would seek a sexual relationship with a woman, however. Certainly, sexuality is fluid, but this ending is just ridiculous because it simply doesn't represent the gay community in general.

Does Brodie at least identify as bisexual? Because at least that would make sense. Or maybe if Ruthie was an FtM trans man or a drag Queen, but your summary seems to have eliminated those two possibilities.

No. He's portrayed as a complete homosexual. A 6 on the Kinsey scale.
