It would be premature to assume that the bad guy in the story was motivated by Christian principles and the good guy wasn't.

Well, the bad guy certainly WAS motivated by Christian principles.  Whether the baker was or was not is probably immaterial, although her first thought was to avoid a potential lawsuit (I'm not sure if avoiding lawsuits is a Christian principle or not). She seems primarily concerned with adhering to her business practices, irrespective of what her religious beliefs may be.
