Kenosha Shooter Kyle Rittenhouse

RE: Kenosha Shooter Kyle Rittenhouse
Somehow, I get the feeling that the sort of consideration Brian was talking about was about more than how the police acted when they tried to apprehend him.

This kid is claiming self defense -after killing a couple people and oddly enough President Trump seems to be going along with that.

My thoughts -

I have carried a concealed pistol - almost every day - for going on 20 years. I have not had an incident to date.

A big part of that is because I avoid areas where trouble might be likely to happen.

Like riots.

The kid is lucky I won't be on his jury - because I would likely go along with the prosecutor on this one. He could have stayed home and not been part of the problem. And - he should not have dragged a loaded gun into a riot situation. Trained professionals only do that as a last resort.

Were I the prosecutor - I would also go after whoever got him his rifle - because a 17 year old cannot legally purchase one.

He brought the fight to the crowd.

If the crowd had brought the fight to him - it would be a different story.

I don't know. I kind of see it like the Trayvon Martin case. Zimmerman seems to be a terrible person, and he shouldn't have been following Martin, but he broke no laws in doing so and was rightly found not guilty because it seems to have been a justifiable killing in self defense.

Whether Rittenhouse should have been there or not is really irrelevant to me just like in the Trayvon Martin case. I don't know about the first guy Rittenhouse shot and killed, but the next two that he shot seem to be completely justified based on the video that we have. Trying to attack a guy with a gun is suicide so I can't really feel sorry for the attackers getting shot. You don't have to just sit there and let someone bash your head in with a skateboard or kick you in the skull and maybe beat you to death after that. When he was attacked, he was in the process of running to the police to surrender.

Yeah, you lost me the moment you gave any support to Zimmerman.

He was found not guilty for a reason. There was plenty of reasonable doubt. The law is not about how nice of a person you are, and like I said, Zimmerman is not a nice guy. That is not relevant. When you are attacked like Zimmerman was, you are allowed to defend yourself with a firearm. That is the law, at least in Florida, like it or not. I'm not going to just automatically say that every black person killed is murder because they are black. I wouldn't be living in reality if I did that.

The word murder is being re-defined and watered down by so many, just like the word racism has been. Instead of racism meaning thinking that one race is superior to another, racism now supposedly is any sleight, no matter how minor, committed by a white person against a non-white person, and murder to so many now means that someone they don't like killed someone, the circumstances surrounding that be damned. No nuance necessary. An asshole or cop fired a weapon, so it's automatically murder. That's not what murder is. That's not how things work, no matter how much people try to re-define words.

There is a big difference.

Expectation.

...

I carry a gun daily - and I do not have any expectation of having a violent confrontation that would neccessitate my use of my gun.

George Zimmerman had no expectation that Mr Martin would get violent and attack him. (He did - as proved by forensic evidence)

Going to a riot?

Ya think ya MIGHT run into a bit of shit?

Think - before you carry.

It's the right way to do it.

Fair enough. Maybe he shouldn't have been carrying a gun going into a riot. At the same time, I can understand the frustration of so many that the police are being told to stand down and let the rioters burn down cities and businesses, that young guys like this get to thinking that they have to do the police's job for them because the police are not allowed to do their job for political reasons or whatever.

I doubt the young man thought that the rioters would be suicidal and dumb enough to try to disarm him, though. It takes a special kind of stupid to try to disarm someone like that. And even if he did think there was a good chance something like this could happen, that still shouldn't matter when it comes to the law I don't think. He either rightfully defended himself, or he broke the law and had no right to fire those shots. He appeared to be acting lawfully, at least in the video that I saw.

RE: Kenosha Shooter Kyle Rittenhouse
Yeah, just so we’re clear, there’s a difference between the lawyers creating reasonable doubt and the jury deciding it was reasonable self defense.

Fun fact: I recently rewatched The Jinx and they go over Robert Durst’s trial over the murder of Morris Black. Even though Durst admitted to cutting up the body and disposing it in the bay, he claimed that the actual killing was accidental, and through a combination of panic and drinking, he decided the best thing to do was to chop him up and toss him in the bay like so much chum. Because the forensics was unable to demonstrate otherwise, and because the DA chose to only charge him with murder and nothing else (and his attorney made sure to constantly bring up this point to the jury), he ended up walking. Apparently, when it came time for the jury to deliberate, there were no more than three jurors voting for conviction at any time. Well, after pleading guilty to the much lesser charges of bail jumping and evidence tampering, anyway.

And if you want to know why Zimmerman walked and a jury decided there wasn’t enough proof he killed Trayvon Martin in cold blood, there’s your answer: that lawyer created a lot of room for doubt and eventually, he was found not guilty. There may have been less room for this to happen if they chose to charge him with say, manslaughter, or maybe even second degree manslaughter, but the point is that’s what happened. And, honestly, looking at the case, the most charitable interpretation of Zimmerman’s actions I think is plausible is that he might have just been that paranoid and an innocent black teen died because of it. And that’s just be being extremely charitable towards him.
