This ignores the fact that 48 of the 50 states have winner-take-all allocations for their EC delegation. If you're in California or Georgia, voting third-party is not at all a vote for the party standard-bearer, because those states overwhelmingly vote one party or the other regularly. There are plenty of states like those two.

In 2016, I voted for Gary Johnson, not because I thought he had a chance of winning, but because he was the least of the evils presented on my ballot and I didn't want to add a vote to either major party. Before I did that, I scanned the polls regularly (RCP being my main source), and decided my vote when I saw that Trump had a 750,000-vote lead here in Texas.

Under these circumstances no one can say I helped elect Trump, because a Clinton vote from me would not have made a difference anyone. At that point, a protest vote made sense to me.

Any way you vote (or not vote) is a good thing.

It's yours. Use it or not as you wish.

Anyone who complains about your choice does not understand the concept of choice.

There is truth in that. However to not use a power for the good of humankind is also something you must understand. Now I know all USA political parties are trash, but until we can think of a better one you choose the one that sells Democracy instead the one that sells the Conservative: "we don't give a crap about the people" or the Libertarian: "definitely not anarchy or big brother friendly" or GreenPeace: "You can't take us seriously".
