The "Golden Earrings" swear that their song was not based on the "Manhattan Transfer" song "Twilight Zone" but according to this  article it was based on the future popular spy novel "The Bourne Identity".

You’re missing the point. How could Kooymans base the song on a future novel? I’ll save you the trouble of trying to wrap your tiny mind around what (to you) might seem like an insoluble problem: he couldn’t.

The Bourne Identity was published in 1980 and was the second-best selling novel of that year. It stayed on the best seller list for 95 weeks. So, it wasn’t a future popular spy novel, but a current one (Kooymans wrote the song in 1982).
