I have my own technique for painting cars. I take the car to a paint shop and say, ‘How much to make this blue?’
Works every time.

How many businesses have actually asked you that? Your cabbie? Your grocer? When you call the local pizza shop and ask the price of a large pie, do they ask you how much money you have?
C’mon.

Got the paint ordered and it's set to be here sometime next week. Thank you @ brewer for posting that video. It was crucial help in researching for this. I also briefly looked into Testor's enamel but since it's not made to hold up in outdoor conditions, I went ahead and sprang for the 1-shot high-gloss oil-based lettering enamel.
The figures I'll be doing are Jane Jetson next to a wood plane on one side of the car and Jane Porter(from Disney's Tarzan) next to a graphical depiction of a plane on the other side. This is what my father wanted. Both are going to be about a foot tall, no bigger. So, it should be straightforward.
When the paint comes, I'll be practicing on a couple of scrap pieces of metal for a few days. There's always a learning curve when I first encounter a new medium, so, I want to fiddle with it freely for a bit before going at the car. I'll post pics as I go.

Is there a very specific thing you wish to paint, or will you settle for a broadly similar thing? There are many designs available in commercially made vinyl car wraps.
These are a thick clear film specifically made to fit each car. If professionally applied the results look just like a perfectly applied custom paint job of impressive sophistication. It is guaranteed to look much better than a 1st effort at painting it yourself.

My father said he specifically asked me to do this because of the personalized touch. He wants my art on his car. Now that I know it is possible, I am fairly confident in my ability to make this look good. But you're correct. Getting a sticker printed will probably look better.

I hope you share pictures. It's pretty cool that your dad thinks enough of your artwork to want it displayed so prominently.

So, I've got my paint, all the colors that I need. All bought in 1-Shot oil-based lettering enamel. I decided to practice before going ahead and doing the commission for my dad, simply because I'm unfamiliar with this material. I don't know how enamel will be different from oil paint.
Turns out, not different at all. My practice is done on a piece of metal that my father gave me, painted with the exact same paint he has on his car. It took me 4 hours exactly from start to finish. I really like how quick the 1-shot paint dries. It starts to go but you have a few moments before it gets gummy, so, I can add another color and mix it right on the canvas to blend it. And in cases like when I needed the bright white against the black, I waited 5-10 minutes, working on another part of it, and then I could directly apply white without mixing in the black.
It was a lot of fun and I think I will enjoy this project. I decided to use Bruce Timm's Poison Ivy as a practice, so as not to make my ADHD short out doing my real commission twice. That'd suck, yeah? To paint one of the Janes beautifully on this scrap metal and then lose the motivation to do it on the actual car. I free-hand drew her from sight. I think her hips are a bit wide and her head tilt isn't exact. So, I might use homemade stencils to help guide my hand for the two Janes on the actual car.

Damn, that's a mighty fine job! If you want, you should hang out a shingle, painting pinstripes on old guys' hot rods. You have enough paint left to do a bunch of vehicles if you're using the 4 ounce tins.
