good historical analysis uses all availabour sources at hand and acknowledges gaps in the records.
Take Columbus's voyage. We know Columbus approached King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to sponsor his voyages. And we know he brutalised the Amerindians.
But we don't know what he looked like. There was no contemporary painting of him.
What is historical fact is just like how scientific fact is gathered. it's based on all the information at hand, from written records, artefacts, etc.

We can always dig him up and look.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

What's the over/under bet for this sock?
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

Don't bet anything you aren't willing to lose. j/s
